Munich International Airport (Germany)
Baggage Handling System Terminal 2
1996 - 2005
In 1996, Logplan was contracted by Munich International Airport to provide consulting services to conduct the
feasibility and conceptual studies for the baggage handling systems proposed for the different designs of the new
Terminal 2 at Munich Airport.
The Terminal 2 expansion was to allow Munich to become a hub airport for Lufthansa, Germany's largest carrier. A hub operation places high demands on a baggage system to ensure minimum connection times, the new baggage system needed to realize a minimum connection time (MCT) of 30 minutes. The new baggage system designed by Logplan can handle up to 15,000 bags per hour (up to 21,000 in the next planned expansion phase), provide early baggage storage for 3,500 bags, transport inbound baggage from the satellite to the bag claims in the terminal, and provides in-line 100% automated baggage screening. To achieve all the goals of the airport, a tray system was chosen with a total track length of over 38,000 m (23.6 miles).
During the planning phase for the baggage screening system, Logplan made sure that each screening machine
could be initiated independently, allowing 100% baggage screening to be possible even if one device were
to fail. Due to this flexible design, the system has the ability to be updated to allow for the implementation
of higher scanning ability of future devices.
For this project, Logplan was responsible for the preliminary design, creation of tender documents and the technical and economical evaluation of proposals. Logplan supported the airport with contract negotiations, planning, construction management and engineering services for this project during the implementation phase of this system. Logplan also provided testing, commissioning and post installation support.
Transfer Baggage Sorter
1998
In 1998, Logplan provided planning services for the Transfer Baggage Sortation System (RGS3) at Munich Airport.
Logplan was also responsible for the creation of tender documents and the technical and economical evaluation
of proposals.
