Salzburg International Airport (Austria)

2002 - 2005

Baggage Sorter with Pusher As a popular ski destination, Salzburg Airport has high traffic peaks during the winter season. For this reason a new terminal 2 was built. In the peak period, the baggage handling system has to handle up to 10 times more bags per day than during the off season. In 2002, Logplan was contracted by the airport to prepare the conceptual design of a new baggage handling system that could handle the seasonal peak loads.

The developed system serves the Terminal 1 and the new Terminal 2 facilities which include the connection of 33 check-in counters with a central sorting hall. In the sorting hall the baggage is automatically sorted to 20 destinations.

The system provides redundant conveyor lines as well as a redundant control system. On the way from the check-in area to the sorting hall, all bags pass an in-line 100% baggage screening system which includes four screening levels. Logplan planned and designed the system, produced the tender documents, supported the airport to select the best bidder for the realization of the project, controlled the detailed planning and oversaw the testing of the system.

The system was installed by the supplier in less than 10 months. The system was started up for the first time in December 2004. Logplan completed the high volume tests for the new baggage handling system in 2005. The system has successfully operated for the airport since its first start up in 2004.
